Mel Makinson

Artist's Statement

I have a passion for painting which stems from being brought up in a house that regularly accommodated various artists. They kindly shared their materials, techniques and critiques with the children who were about. I have had some fantastic teachers, at school and at evening classes which I like to attend. I enjoy learning every day.

I have drawn and painted from a very young age both for pleasure and from necessity, and sold art and high quality craftwork to businesses and by commission in Ireland UK and America.

I find fascination all around me. I love light, colour, textures and layers, especially layers in landscapes, seascapes, and in the faces and shapes of the people all around me.  I enjoy working on both large and small scale projects.  I have completed several commissions for Murals as well as backdrops and scenery for local stage productions.  I accept commissions for space specific pieces, which take into account size, lighting and hanging requirements, working with the client to achieve a unique piece of work that fits with the aesthetic requirement. It is always exciting to watch how these commissions change and grow as they reach completion.

I work with children and adults facilitating art groups in various places and situations and am qualified to teach adults. I enjoy being able to adapt to whatever circumstances are presented tailoring sessions to each group or individual I am working with.

I am available to undertake commissions, and to teach groups.
