Crispin Robinson, Deputy Head and former Head of Art History at Stowe School gave us a fascinating talk complete with slide show. Apologies to the audience and to Crispin for the lack of light in the first half but for me this in no way hampered my interest. And what an excellent talk it was featuring the works of Fra Angelico and Fra Filippo Lippi from the 14th and 15th centuries. We had Sun style headlines about 'Buns in the Oven', stories about a Friar akin to friar Tuck, a Friar in chains, a Friar shinning down knotted sheets to gain his pleasures in the seedy parts of the south side of Florence, forgery, court cases, and finally torture. After tea Crispin gave us an insight in how the new concept of perpective was employed in these artists' paintings. A thoroughly enjoyable evening!
